My name is Zahirah and I joined Aylward Academy after completing my Science PGCE at the IoE, London. I completed my NQT at Aylward after having been placed here during my PGCE year. I chose to remain at Aylward for my NQT as I felt it offered me a great opportunity to develop as a teacher and successfully qualify with the support of a great team.

During my second year of teaching I was offered the role of Pathway Co-ordinator in Science and Head of Vocational Sciences. I was then offered a Lead Practitioner role and have been in this position for the last two years. As Lead Practitioner, I work closely with the VP for T&L to improve Teaching and Learning across the Academy. I also focus on strengthening the quality of teaching in Science and developing resources, planning lessons to a high standard to ensure student learning is excellent.

Due to the supportive English department at Aylward Academy, I am enjoying my first teaching experience and am able to improve with the guidance of my colleagues. Similarly, the NQT CPD which I receive has also allowed me to gain context-relevant training, which I have also had support in implementing within my own teaching and planning. At Aylward we also have the opportunity to become more responsible and have an input in terms of faculty and extra-curricular activities. As there is a culture of shared ideas and practice, I am continually developing and engaging in activities which allow me to be reflective. The pupils continue to be a major source of motivation, constantly surprising me with their kindness, individuality and inquisitiveness.

I am now into my 13th year at Aylward Academy. My journey here started off as a long term supply teacher to cover a maternity leave. I was hired as an English teacher and I completed my NQT year. A year later, I was successful in my application to become a Head of Year and I continued in this role for seven years. During this time I was lucky enough to see two cohorts through to the end of year 11 and was able to gain an excellent understanding of the issues faced by our students and the different factors that effect the lives of our students at different ages, phases and key stages. During this time, I developed a good relationship with parents, families, students and also the local community. In 2014, along with being a Head of Year, I was successful in my application for the role of Temporary Assistant Vice Principal and in 2015 this was made a permanent position with responsibility for Primary Transition, ACD (rota), Internal Exclusion Centre, Prevent Lead, being part of the CP team and overseeing years 7,8 and 9.

Aylward Academy is a very special place to work in. The students come from all walks of life and from so many different cultures and backgrounds and this multi cultural nature is celebrated. The students that come to Aylward know that despite all the issues in the local area, this is a place where they feel safe and able to express themselves and are given every opportunity to be the best that they can be. It is a place where we remove barriers to students learning and encourage students to believe that anything is possible, if you want it and are willing to work for it.
